Professor O’Higgins graduated MB BCh BAO (Honours) from the University College, Dublin, Ireland. He held the position of Professor and Head of the Department of Surgery at St Vincent’s University Hospital for thirty years before taking on the role of Professor Emeritus at University College, Dublin. He is also an Advisor to the U.K’s Department of Health on Oncology Affairs in Europe and has recently been appointed Chair of the National Screening Committee of Ireland.
A general surgeon with a special interest in surgical endocrinology and surgical oncology, he established the first Breast Clinic in Ireland and played a pivotal role in establishing screening services for breast cancer in Ireland. He has contributed to over three hundred scientific publications and was the co-author of a major surgical textbook. He was awarded the Presidents Medal of the Royal College of Surgeons of England as well as the American College of Surgeons.
